The Story Behind Diwali

The Legend of Lord Rama and the Triumph of Light

The festival of Diwali celebrates the victory of good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and light over darkness. The festival is based on the legend of Lord Rama, the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who returned to his kingdom Ayodhya after 14 years of exile and defeating the demon king Ravana.

According to the legend, Lord Rama’s wife Sita was kidnapped by Ravana, the demon king of Lanka, and taken to his kingdom. Lord Rama, with the help of his loyal friend Hanuman, fought a fierce battle with Ravana and eventually killed him, freeing Sita and returning to Ayodhya with her.

Upon their return, the people of Ayodhya lit lamps and decorated their homes and streets with flowers to celebrate their victory and to welcome Lord Rama and Sita. This tradition of lighting lamps and decorating homes with flowers and rangolis (colored powder designs) continues to this day and is an integral part of the Diwali celebration.

Diwali is also a celebration of the goddess of wealth and prosperity, Lakshmi. On the night of Diwali, people light lamps and candles to invite Lakshmi into their homes and to bring good fortune for the upcoming year. In addition to lighting lamps and decorating homes, Diwali is also celebrated with fireworks, exchanging gifts, and feasting on traditional Indian sweets and snacks.

Overall, the festival of Diwali is a time for celebration, happiness, and spreading joy to others. It is a time to reflect on the victory of good over evil, and to remind ourselves of the importance of knowledge, light, and truth.

Jyoti Pratishthan is sure to be a night to remember for everyone as people from different walks of life are expected to come together to celebrate the joy and unity that Diwali brings. So, come join us at Jyoti Pratishthan and experience the magic of Diwali like never before.

The Karwa Chauth Story and Tradition

Karwa Chauth, a cherished event in Hindu culture, is a beautiful manifestation of love and devotion between married couples.

The legend revolves around the devotion of a queen named Veeravati, who ardently observed the fast for her husband’s well-being. Once, while observing the fast, her husband, the king, faced a grave danger. Queen Veeravati’s unwavering determination and prayers to Goddess Parvati ensured her husband’s safety. However, due to her fasting, the queen became weak and fainted. Upon regaining consciousness, she found her husband injured. Witnessing this, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati restored the king’s health. From that day forth, Karwa Chauth became a revered tradition symbolizing the bond between husband and wife, strengthened by love, sacrifice, and the blessings of the divine.

During this auspicious day, wives fast from sunrise to moonrise, praying for the longevity and prosperity of their husbands. The preparations begin a few days in advance by shopping for vibrant attires and intricate jewelry, enhancing the festive spirit. Both married and unmarried women indulge in henna art. The day begins early with a pre-dawn meal, followed by the day-long fast, which culminates in a heartfelt ceremony at moonrise, bringing immense joy and celebration as couples come together to perform rituals and share a meal.
